After G2 advanced to the semi-finals following wins over NiP and Liquid, we grabbed Adil "ScreaM" Benrlitom for an interview about the French-Belgian team's journey so far at ECS Season 1 Finals.
G2 kicked things off on the wrong foot, as they lost to Liquid in a one-sided Cobblestone match yesterday.
They however made up for their mistakes against Ninjas in Pyjamas in the elimination, defeating the Swedes on two comfortable maps before beating Liquid in a re-match, that time in a best-of-three.
ScreaM and G2 wanted to take revenge on NiP for ELEAGUE
Following G2's latest match, Adil "ScreaM" Benrlitom talked about the initial loss, as well as coming back to advance to semi-finals, current state of Nuke and more:
Before this event you qualified for the Major, how confident were you after that to go through the group stage here at ECS?
We have been playing really good lately and last time in London we had a really good event, ESL Pro League. After that everything went really good. We lost some games at the qualifier, we were a bit shaky because, in my opinion, we just travelled too much and in terms of hours we haven't really played that much. So we could feel it, but then we came back home and had some good practice, it went way better. We came here really confident actually, we lost against Liquid on Cobble but we just had a bad game on that day, we fell really good otherwise.
Talking about the shakiness and the first Liquid match, Hiko told me they tried to focus on shutting down shox, did you ever feel that way in the game?
No, not at all. What I felt is that we just played bad and lost all the clutches. All the basics, setups and everything was really bad, but we didn't feel that they were focusing on shutting down shox or something like that. They had a good game and we had a really bad one, that's really the only thing I remember.
Going over to the elimination match versus NiP, it ended up going your way quite comfortably, what do you account the win to?
We had a talk before and everyone was so motivated for this game and to take the revenge for ELEAGUE. We just wanted to win and that's what we did, I'm happy about it.
Talking about Liquid again, were you more confident to go into a best-of-three as opposed to a best-of-one against a new team that's likely to have issues on more maps?
Well, they're a mix, but we know that they have really good players, actually. Of course, best-of-three is better than best-of-one, especially when you play Cobble, that's not our best map. I just wanna forget about this best-of-one, because we just played bad. Best-of-three is always better for us of course.
Touching on Nuke, you've become one of the teams that are trying to adopt the map into their map pool, how confident do you really feel on it?
We all loved the past Nukes, so when it came out we just practised it directly and we feel really good on it. We have some good setups, some good tactics - well, not tactics, but a good game plan - and we have good experience on it compared to the others. It's obviously a CT-sided map and Terrorists are difficult, but we did it.
What do you think about the changes that were made on Nuke, do you think it's been changed enough for it to stay in the map pool permanently as it stands?
The change is good, but I think they could update the map a bit more. It's of course playable, I love playing the map, but the inside and the ramp feel weird to me.
You will be facing fnatic in the semis, thoughts on the match-up as olofmeister is back and you haven't played them since then?
I really wanted to play fnatic when I came here, because olof is back and it's not the same team anymore. We beat them in London, so I just wanna beat them again with olof.
